Arriving in San Francisco was spectacular as we crossed over the Oakland Bridge and saw the city come into view, with the glass buildings all sparkling in the early morning sun.
We had no trouble finding parking in a lot across from Pier 17. All-day parking was $30.99 for 12 hours. We had read reviews that many cars get broken into in the area. We used common sense and left no valuables in the truck and had no issues.
We made our way to the ferry to Alcatraz Island. The line was short with no waits. I think during peak season, tickets have set sail times. But again, traveling in the Fall has benefits. No waits, no lines. The weather was amazing, so sitting on the top deck under the sun felt great. We did the self-guided audio tour, which we liked, but our audio sets had issues which we mentioned to staff who teased that the prison ghosts were responsible. It did, however, get us a private tour of the hospital wing, which was great. We enjoyed our Alcatraz experience, probably can't be said for those who were jailed there. The cells were small and many, three stories high. The cells in solitary confinement actually looked bigger and more private with views across the water to the city.
We boarded the ferry and made our way back. We strolled along the boardwalk towards Fisherman's Wharf, where we found a great little lunch spot at the Chowder Hut.

After lunch, we explored Pier 39 and all the interesting shops and sights. I wish we had more than a day to explore San Francisco. It was fun, had great vibes, and there was so much more to see than we could fit in a day.
A fabulous time we had exploring San Francisco!
