Old Sacramento

"The area was established in 1839 by John Sutter as Sutter Fort, a settlement that became a major commercial center during the Gold Rush. Old Sacramento was the western terminus of the Pony Express, the first transcontinental railroad, and the transcontinental telegraph."

Parking was ample, and there were 2-hour street pay meters for $1 per hour. Not sure what it's like in Summer, but Fall was the perfect time as temperatures were milder at 19 degrees Celsius and no crowds.

A short one-hour drive from Lake Camanche, Old Sacramento was super fun with lots to see, places to eat, candy stores, and more. Bill had fond memories of his time there with his shipmates in 1989 when they sailed down for the Camellia Festival with the Canadian Navy, so a stop at Fanny Ann's had him feeling nostalgic and recounting old navy tales to me over the most awesome Angus Burgers. Looking from the outside, Fanny Ann's is not what one would expect to see on the inside. I walked in and was transported to some crazy whimsical, eclectic, displayed array of bibs and bobs, old things, years upon years of carved initials along the bar top and table tops, wheel rims hung from the ceilings, brass thingys, worn horse collars, old cowboy boots, vintage video games, fun bathroom antics, dark and bright all at the same time, weird, and wonderful were everywhere. It wasn't just the layers upon layers of dive bar that made it fun. There was a history in those walls that you could feel of the generations past and the good times that were had. You really have to visit to appreciate the wonderful vibes it exudes.

We strolled the streets a while looking at the various shops. We came across this massive candy store that had all the childhood goodies and now had me feeling nostalgic as well. Fun dip, pop rocks, nerds, they had them all, and of course, I bought a bagful! When we got home that night we each popped a handful of pop-rocks into our mouths, sticking out our tongues like a couple of 10-year-olds.

Keep your inner child alive within you till the end of your journey. For it's the only way to actually live life to your fullest & to keep your heart alive”.
