As experienced BC Ferry travelers to Vancouver Island where we used to live, we thought it would be helpful to create a separate post for those considering a visit to the Island for the first time. Vancouver Island is beautiful and a must go visit when in British Columbia, but taking the ferry can be challenging if you're not prepared.

If taking the ferry by vehicle, it would be good to note the ferries become particularly busy on holidays and during the summer months, so planning ahead and making a reservation is essential. Otherwise, you might end up waiting for hours, if not all day, at a ferry terminal. The terminals on the mainland as well as the island both have washroom facilities and food options, or you can eat on the ferry. However, be prepared to wait in line to get food if you choose to eat on the ferry. Pets - check BC Ferries rules for pets, as they are not allowed on the upper decks with you.

On a pleasant day, the ferry ride offers beautiful views and takes about 1 hour and 35 minutes to travel from the mainland to the island, and if you're really lucky, you might see whales or porpoises. There are several routes available, so check the BC Ferries website to find the one that best suits your needs as well costs...it's not cheap taking a RV across. BC Ferries also operates smaller ferries for travel to the Gulf Islands.

Hope you make to the Island there is so much to see and do and one of Canada's most beautiful places to visit!
